I put down pen in paper
And begin to write
By the gentle flickering
of the candlelight.
Had the words not chosen
To begin to flow
The story of the candlelight
No one would know.
The still deep dark of
Many a moonless night
Is where poets and philosophers
Poured out their insight.
Writings from Shakespeare, Plato
and Thoreau came about
Behind many hours of candlelight,
There can be no doubt.
Just stop and think about
How many flickers it took
From the candlelight to write
A philosophy, poem or book.
History tells that the candle evolved
In Egypt around 3,000 BC.
Used by scholars and scribes,
It guided captains across the sea.
Something so small and yet
So very bright.
How much has man accomplished
By the candlelight.
