Thank You Church of the Presidents!

9/4/2004 - The Prison Book Program would like to thank the United First Parish Church of Quincy for offering to host us in their basement. UFPC is also known as "The Church of the Presidents" because it was the church where John Adams and John Quincy Adams worshipped. In fact, the Adams' and their wives are buried in the church itself.

Moving Postponed Until the End of October

9/4/2004 - Thanks to the new owner of 110 Arlington Street, we have postponed our move to Quincy until the end of October. We have targeted the weekend of October 23rd for the actual move. We will likely be packing our office during the preceding week. We will need lots of help doing this. We will be posting specific help needs here and on our mailing list.

Asbestos Removal and Other Professional Help Needed in Our New Space in Quincy

9/4/2004 - Our new space is in the basement of the United First Parish Church in Quincy Center (aka: The Church of the Presidents). There is an ancient heating duct in the space that needs to be removed and there is a small amount of asbestos in it. If you know of any asbestos abatement professionals that would do some pro bono work for us, please contact info@prisonbookprogram.org. We will also need help removing the heating ducts and disposing of the sheet metal involved. In addition, we will need some help putting up sheetrock and painting.

prisonbookprogram.org Has a New Look

5/27/2004 - Thanks to the efforts of Whitney Lader and Melissa Basile, students at the New England School of Art and Design, prisonbookprogram.org has a new look. The design students approached us in March about creating a new interface for us as part of a class assignment. We're very happy they found us and we thank them for their efforts!

Howard Zinn Speaks at PBP Fundraiser

4/20/2004 - Historian Howard Zinn participated in a fundraiser for the Prison Book Program. Zinn is a radical historian and long time activist for social justice. He is best known for his book "A People's History of the United States" which which presents American history through the eyes of those outside of the political and economic establishment: Native Americans, slaves, women, blacks, populists, etc.

Zinn spoke about issues related to the prison-industrial complex and answered questions from the audience. The very diverse audience brought up subjects including the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and the issue of faith-based prisons in the United States.

Over 50 people attended the event and contributed over $1500. The funds will cover the cost of mailing books to an additional 750 prisoners! Howard Zinn has been a long-time supporter of the Prison Book Program. We thank him for taking the time to participate in this event and for his continued support.
